2009 will be remembered as a decision making year for the Society of Philippine Surgeons in America. This summer the Board of Governors voted unanimously to continue with the next Reaccreditation Cycle of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). This cycle will begin in 2011.
Our Surgical Mission Team under the direction of Pacifico D. Dorado, M.D. and Manuel A. Cacdac, M.D. went to Cagayan de Oro, City of Gold, Misamis Oriental, Mindanao. The team completed 360 surgical procedures during the 5 day stay. Our host, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri visited the hospital during our Mission to see firsthand how our dedicated team serves the people of the Philippines. Senator Zubiri and Congressman Rufus Rodriguez hosted a terrific appreciation and going-away party on the last night of our visit.
The Spring Board Meeting was held aboard the Costa Cruise Line “Fortuna” starting from Venice, Italy and on to the beautiful Greek Islands and Croatia. The trip was packed full of activities but we found time to hold a Category II CME Symposium while cutting through the water on our “day at sea.”
Our annual CME Seminar in Surgery was held on St. Simon’s Island, GA and featured at the Third Rodrigo Floro, M.D. Memorial Lecture was speaker Princy N, Kumar, M.D., Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Chief of Infectious Diseases at Georgetown University Hospital. She gave a spirited talk to update care of the surgical patient in an era of increasing bacterial resistance. The Seminar closed with a dinner dance where Reynaldo Lee Llacer, M.D., President of the SPSA, gave a speech calling upon all the members to become involved in all the working of the Society. He reminded everyone, the giving of oneself can make the dream of the mission of our Society become a reality.
Bernabe Palomares, M.D. was elected as SPSA President for 2009-2010 and Agaton Gualberto, M.D. is President Elect.
The Board is looking forward to our 2010 Spring Meeting which will be held aboard the Uniworld River Cruise Line along the “enchanting Danube River”. Please note that everyone is welcome to join the Board. Get in touch with Mary E. Zamora, SPSA Coordinator @ (843) 243-0369 if you are interested in cruising with us.
